Questions to ask in retirement

There are many questions to ask yourself when you are seriously considering retirement for the first time, or even the second time. Most of those questions surround the financial arena, such as “do I have enough money” or even “will I run out of money” – these are the most serious questions we all ask ourselves of course.

There is something else to consider though, do I really WANT to retire? To most of us, that’s a pretty silly question. Of course I want to retire, on the surface anyway. Under the consideration of what does it really mean to retire, and what will I do all day, it’s much more concerning than you think. The truth of the matter is, that retirement can get pretty boring! That is, if you don’t plan ahead and make some kind of strategy.

So really, in my mind, there are two questions you have to ask yourself. Not just CAN I retire (do I have the financial resources) but also do I WANT to retire (am I psychologically prepared). These are two entirely seperate considerations, and both questions must be answered if you really want to have a successful and happy retirement. Even when you have plenty of money, the question is what does retirement look like for me? What will you do all day, as so many people have asked themselves at this point in life.

Everybody is different, but in my experience most people like to stay busy. If you are the type of person who can sit and do nothing all day except putter around the house, maybe this won’t be a problem for you. However, I have to do something to feel like I have a purpose – not a job, mind you, but something useful that makes a difference! Whether that is making something with your hands, remodeling your kitchen or bathroom by yourself, or just fixing things around the house, staying busy and useful is more fulfilling for me. I also enjoy reading quite a bit, which believe it or not I also find useful. Why? It helps my brain stay busy and activated, which is important for us all as we age so we don’t get depressed or worse. Exercise on a regular basis is also very important, as we older that body is already slowing down and for most people the arthritis is starting to kick in as well. Yes, exercise helps arthritis, but also keeps your body healthy in so many ways – and is good for your mental attitude as well. Not to mention it will help you live longer!

Why do you want to retire? Good question, hopefully you don’t have to think too hard to come up with an answer. Being able to sleep late is great, but it isn’t the path to happiness in the long run unless you something to keep you busy at least for part of the day. Get a hobby, make a plan, and be prepared for when your retirement day comes. You will be glad you did if you are truly ready, both financially and psychologically.
